Senior Embedded C Software Engineer
Location: Oxford, Oxfordshire | Hybrid working

At Siemens Healthineers, we pioneer breakthroughs in healthcare. For everyone. Everywhere. Sustainably. We are looking for a Senior Embedded C Software Engineer to help develop the intelligent firmware behind our advanced medical technology. This is an opportunity to apply your embedded software expertise to products that support clinical decision-making and improve experiences for patients around the world, while working in a collaborative, supportive engineering environment where your ideas, curiosity and technical judgement will be valued.

About the role

You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team developing embedded software for microcontroller-based systems used within our magnet technology. The software you create will run directly on the system, helping monitor performance, interact with sensors, manage control functions, log data and support safe, reliable operation.

This is a hands-on role across the full software lifecycle, from understanding requirements and shaping designs through to coding, debugging, testing and release. It would suit someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working close to hardware, and seeing their software make a real-world impact.

The role is offered on a hybrid basis, with regular on-site working required so you can collaborate with hardware, systems and test colleagues and work directly with equipment when needed.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing, developing and maintaining embedded software in C for ARM-based microcontroller platforms.
  • Building reliable firmware for real-time environments, including RTOS-based applications.
  • Translating requirements into clear, structured software designs, implementation plans and testable outputs.
  • Developing low-level drivers, peripheral interfaces and hardware-facing software components.
  • Integrating software with hardware subsystems including sensors, communication interfaces and control electronics.
  • Debugging and resolving software and hardware integration issues using tools such as JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analysers and related techniques.
  • Creating and supporting unit, integration and system-level testing to help ensure robust software performance.
  • Producing clear technical documentation and supporting structured development, release and configuration-control processes.
  • Contributing to code reviews, continuous improvement, software quality practices and shared engineering standards.
  • Collaborating with electronics, systems, verification, manufacturing, service and product teams to deliver maintainable solutions.

What skills and experience you'll bring

We are looking for someone with a strong foundation in embedded software development who is ready to contribute technically and work closely with others to deliver high-quality engineering outcomes.

You will ideally bring:

  • Strong experience developing embedded software or firmware in C.
  • Practical experience with ARM-based microcontrollers, ideally Cortex-M platforms.
  • Good working knowledge of real-time systems and RTOS concepts.
  • Experience with embedded interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN or USB.
  • Confidence debugging embedded systems and working through technical problems in a structured way.
  • Experience using version control tools such as Git or Azure DevOps.
  • The ability to work closely with electronics and hardware teams, including reading schematics or supporting board bring-up.
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics and contribute constructively in design reviews and project discussions.

It would also be helpful if you have experience with any of the following:

  • Bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms or secure update processes.
  • MISRA C, IEC 62304, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, DO-178C or other safety or regulatory frameworks.
  • Static analysis, unit test frameworks, automated testing or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Python or other scripting tools for test automation or build support.
  • CI/CD pipelines for embedded software.
  • Communications stacks, diagnostics or fieldbus protocols.

Experience can be gained in different industries. We would be interested in hearing from people who have developed embedded software for products involving sensors, control systems, monitoring, data logging or real-time interaction with hardware. This could include medical technology, automotive, aerospace, industrial, consumer technology, marine, energy or other regulated or complex engineering environments.
If you meet most, but not all, of the criteria, we would still encourage you to apply. We value different career paths, transferable experience and people who are keen to keep learning.

What's on offer

  • Competitive base salary
  • 26 days annual leave, with the option to buy up to 10 days and sell up to 5 days
  • Up to 10% matched pension contributions
  • BUPA Private Medical
  • Bonus & Share Save Scheme
  • Free to use on-site gym
  • 2 paid volunteering days a year
  • Hybrid working, with meaningful on-site collaboration and hands-on access to the technology you will help develop
  • The opportunity to work on technically interesting products with a clear purpose in healthcare
  • A supportive environment where you can continue to build your technical capability and contribute to engineering standards, quality and continuous improvement
